Since I figure the stock fuel pump in the R/T is going to reach its limits sooner or later, I decided to pop this setup in the car. Changing out the stock pump with a larger one (like a Walbro 255) is a PITA. And, via a friend I was able to get this stuff via a few parts trades

The pump is good for 600-800 hp (way more than Ill ever need), but at least now Ill never need to worry about fueling again. The pump (which is the size of a soda can) was previously used in a 600 hp Turbo Buick, so I know its good to at least that level.

Also, I am setting this up so I can refill the cell via a quick flip of a switch using the stock tank and pump!

BTW-

When I was getting some of the fittings, the guy behind the counter told me "theres no way you can use those type of fttings and rubber lines with a fuel injected car".

After I informed him that several million Dodges were made that way, he said, "That explains that Dodge Stratus I saw on the side of the road last week that was on fire."

He wasnt going to be happy until he sold me $500 worth of braided line

Its a Bosch.

Its powerful as all get out.......I did a quick informal test (when I was checking that it was powered correctly and the switch was working). I had a bolt in the outlet hose to keep any fuel from dripping out before it was tied into the factory hard lines. I flicked the on switch briefly (about 1 second) and it promptly blew the bolt out of the hose and flung it across the garage floor!

Apparently, this is the same pump used in Lancer Evolution rally cars as well as certain Porsche 911 Turbos.

Im not sure of the exact flow rate of this pump, but at 12V I think it is:

psi - flow in lbs/hr - flow in gal/hr - amps
0 - 405 - 67.5 - 5.4
20 - 375 - 62.5 - 6.9
50 - 320 - 53.33 - 9.0
70 - 300 - 50 - 10.4
100 - 250 - 41.66 - 12.2
120 - 210 - 35 - 13.3

I cant find any ratings at 14 V (which is closer to reality) , but it will certainly be higher.

Those Bosch fuel pumps are also used on early 80's VW's, the ones with mechanical fuel injection(90psi).

so does that mean that some of these pumps might be lurking at the boneyard?

also, you run your car off the fuel cell with this new pump, and when it gets close to empty, you can flip a switch and fill it up from your gas tank with the stock pump? how big is the fuel cell? how often do you think you'll have to refill it as you drive around (do you drive it around town much?) is the fuel cell something you can fill directly, without going through the gas tank first (like when you go to the track and want to put race gas in it without diluting it with your pump gas?) THAT would be REALLY cool. i'd like to see that sometime.

Yes. Im intercepting the stock fuel pump wiring with a manual switch.

5 gallons.

Probably 100-150 miles.

Yes....just pop the trunk, remove the fill cap on the cell, and insert the filling nozzle at the gas station/track pumps and pump away.

i just got a bosch pump with around the same flow ratings: 400 lb/hr @ 0psi, 260 lb/hr @ 100psi. i don't think i will have fuel issues! i just have to remove the in-tank pump and see how i am going to plumb it. i will most likely be running swagelok fittings and stainless lines (at least from the tank to the pump). do you or anyone have pics of the factory pump and what i might have to remove? just never had mine out yet. thanks--->mike

Where can I get one of these pumps? I looked at a pump from an 80 vw rabbit. It was smaller than a soda can,but the pump said max pressure 125 lb. I would like to know what that big pump came off of or part numbers. Thanks

Cool deal on the fuel pump and cell... I got another idea, but easier.....

I am using a venom pump which is a highly modified bosch pump... even higher pressure capability than 130psi....

THe two pumps you want are not cheap nor easily available anywhere....

Bosch pumps:

Porsche 911 twin turbo pump...# ends in 979

Bosch motorsports pump is probably the one from the GN setup...

The motorsports pump is aftermarket only.... # ends in 044

I think the only way I ever found one was searching on ASK JEEVES for bosch motorsports pump... A ford place has them for like $250 ? but I found the venom brand pump from Jeg's for $196.00 shipped and it will do 550-600hp, so I should be ok....

BTW-my fuel system will not be running long lines the length of the car... YOu will all see some pics in a couple of months I guess...

GOOD LUCK!

Holy mackerel! This thread came back from the archives!

My Bosch pump died ages ago and I replaced it with a Walbro GSL 392 and its been fine. In fact, I think the GSL 392 is an even stronger pump. I know at idle the minimum base pressure I could achieve went up over the Bosch. Plus, I have run 120-130 psi pressure with the GSL392 with no issues at all.

There is a magazine on the newsstand called Turbo & high-tech performance which has a comparrison on high flow fuel pumps that list the Walbro 255 at different voltage levels. I think the cover picture shows a picture of a turbine on this edition?

here is a link; http://www.turbomagazine.com/toc/
