Has anyone run a Jacobs setup on the 2.2? Was is any smoother through the RPMs?

Yes I have. The idle was much smoother but the coil cannot take the load of a turbo engine. I internally burned up two of them. Jacobs warrantied the first and the second... its sitting on the shelf in the garage. I had the Omni Magnum model with the modual built into the coil itself. They sell separate "coil and modual" units which may be better but for the price I cannot recommend them. Im now running the large oil cooled Mallory Promaster coil part #29940 cost $70. Works awsome and its low impedence coil "0.7 ohm" puts out one he** of a spark. No problems after 10,000 + miles! As a side note I still have the Jacobs 8.5 mm plug wires and would highly recommend them!

Was that the Ultra Coil? I have used these on other applications (1500hp Blown Alcohol) and have had no problems. Plenty of spark and as smooth as a true "Street Outlaw" car could be. I've also run these on other cars (street and strip) for over 18 years and never had one problem with them.

So what kind of "load" does a little turbo produce that a roots 14-71 super charger can't? I still have the coil/ignition going on 15 years now and 4 cars later.....
And how many milijoules of energy does that Mallory coil put out?

No it was the Omni Magnum model quote again "coil and modual are built into one". I also said quote "they also sell SEPARATE coil and modual units which may be better". The pricier units probably are better and they seem to work for you. Im just stating my opinion nothing else. Most people on this board do not have the $500 + to spend on a Jacobs ignition system. As for the milijoules of energy the Mallory puts out I dont know. I do know It puts out a much better spark than the stock coils do and does'nt overheat like the stock coils do under hard use. $70 versus $500 + is quite a difference and not worth the extra money for most of us. As for load of our little turbo motors, I would say 2+ horsepower per cubic inch engine is quite a load on any engine! Your also running alcohol and not pump gas either.

Sorry to get you riled, didn't mean to. Oh, I also ran these on pump gas, nitrous, etc... I'll keep an eye out for the stock coil heating up. My 300+hp 2.2 setup so far seems to be happy. THX for the tip!

BTW I have two Jacobs ignitions for sale as I no longer use them and they will be going at a cheap price!

No problem bro. Its discussions like this that the people need to get some more info on what their asking about. BTW Powermaxx thanks for the part #s for the 87charger window scrubbers. I ordered and received a set from the dealer and they look awesome. Still have not installed them yet though but they look like the same externally! I truely am glad to hear that the better Jacobs units hold up to abuse. I may try one again in the future!

Question: My buddy has a unit that looks to be a spark unit, and it has another box with a few wires comming from it that he understands to be a device to measure the resistance of the spark (not sure about this one). Does that sound like more of an upper line system?

Sounds like it, got any pics? I'm at work now but as I recall there are about 6(?) wires from the ignition box. The Ultra coil has the normal 2 posts for the coil wires (primary) and the secondary output tower/post and a ground wire. BTW Jacobs has wiring diagrams online depending on how old/new they are.
