Does anybody know what the voltage output is on the OEM ignition coil for a '88/'89 T2 engine?
Thanks,
Mike

I would like to know this also, I just got the engine and all accessories back in the van and went to fire it up, and everything looked/sounded normal (it was getting fuel, injectors were pulsing and fuel pump was pumping) but wouldnt start. I have narrowed it down to ignition relation. I took volt tester to my coil, and it was really low, I think .3V on my 12V tester

To double check and make sure it was my coil, I hooked the -/+ on the coil right to the battery, and tried cranking the car while holding the coil plug ( one that goes to the distributor) and even then with battery directly on it, the spark was VERY weak when we grounded it to the frame but it did produce a spark. So if I am atleast any sort or of spark at all, everything prior to the coil is working? I am hoping that this is my problem, everyone should like what they see if I ever get it up and running

One thing I just remebered as well, is that my tach bounces all over the place when cranking the car, as well as a ticking sound coming from the cars computer. I saw on a few posts that people had this same problem. I also just remembered that I might have forgot to connect the ground on the injector harness ( but I was getting fuel, and injectors were working?)

Thanks in advance guys.

The voltage that goes to the plugs should be around 19,000 volts if I recall correctly.

Holding the + and - to the battery will not get you a spark.

The plus side of the coil is connected to the ASD relay and fuel pump. It will only be at +12volts for the first second that the key is turned and also when the engine is turning.

The minus side of the coil is connected to the power module (or SMEC) and the computer grounds this out to charge the coil and opens the ground to make a spark.

If you want to test a coil, hook the + side to the battery + and momentarily hook the minus to the battery -. The spark will only happen each time you disconnect the -. Be carful that you don't get knocked on your A$$.

It can be as low as 10kV when running or as high as about 40kV when you disconnect the coil lead and hold it an inch or two away.

It will go up with load, but will rarely go near the 40kV max that the coil can actually put out.
