I got a Walbro 255 fuel pump from TU, and in the plastic bag with all the hoses, wires, fittings, and things, it has 2 foam rubber sleeves, which look like they slide over the fuel pump. One is about 3/16" thick, and the other is about 3/8" thick.

I'm guessing it's safe to put these foam sleeves on the pump and in the tank in the gasoline?

What are they for? Making the pump quieter? If so I'll put the thicker one on.

What it is, if the kit is similar to the one I got, is a "universal" in tank pump for several applications. When you remove the old pump, you'll see that it is much larger then the 255 pump that you have now and if you install it without the sleeve it will be very loose in the holder. Find the right size foam sleeve for your application and get some petroleum jelly and "lube" up the sleeve, otherwise you'll have one heck of a time trying to get the pump and sleeve ino the holder. Yes I know odd. Once you have the pump fully installed, I wiped off the extra jelly and install it into my car.

I've had mine in my car for about a year and half, and have had no ill effects with the foam sleeve.

I guess the answer to your question is...yes you can install that foam sleeve.

I'm using the larger sleeve over the pump body as suggested to mount it in the plastic Bosch-style hanger.

The pump fits this hanger just fine BTW, no need to try and find another style if that's what you have. Just dremel the half-circle in the plastic out wider so that the filter can seat against the pump body all the way.

I also contrived to zip-tie the filter onto the end of the pump so that it cannot fall off. Drilled two holes in the plastic and threaded the tie through them and around the filter where you see the little "ramp" on the filter-to-pump adapter.

ttt1 - I'd be happy to, but it's a looong way off! If I get my scanner out (need to sometime this week) I'll see if there's a good pic of the hanger in the FSM.

My outside pump is making bad noises, but I have lots of other things to do first
