If a car is back firing, is the only cause, timing?

It could also mean you have a burnt exhaust valve, or a rich condition on decel. When is it backfiring?

I'm thinking it's the plugs are fouled. i just bought a new set of plugs. im about to go try 'em out. i also just replaced the coil. pulled all the plugs and cylinders 2 and 4 appear to not be firing. i'll let you guys know how it goes after i install them. if the plugs do the trick. i probably won't be back on until around 1 AM.

Fouled plugs. Oh man did she run. I had a smile from ear to ear. It was like when I first bought my 97' Z-28 and first bought my 99' WS6.
