I recently got hte idea of running an alky setup on my car from a user on here called turbojeep.. sounds like a good idea. I just rebuilt my 2.2 T1 using stock, but ported, T1 manifolds, an FM cam, 789 head, 0.020" overbore, new cast pistons, have high volume oil and fuel pumps, mopar perf computer from an '86 w/dostributor to match.

My problem is detonation,, right now I know the stock injectors are too small and probably worn out, so a larger set (36/hr) and an adj regulator are on the way,, but I've got a feeling I'm still gonna have detonation,, the old stock turbocharger makes boost like crazy with the ported manifolds and cam,, easily hits the computer shutoff point around 15 psi,,, and once everything is warmed up,, i can hear detonation as early as around -10 psi..

Would an alky kit help cool things down enuff in the combustion chamber to help this? Has anybody set one up on a T1 with the log manifold? I'd love to see some pics of somebodies setup if they have. And finally,, anybody know if there's a company out there that already has a "kit" setup and ready to go for our cars?

Thanks for any replies
Matt

I''m running this on my '86 log intake car. Look down the list in this forum,
"alcohol injection setup" by Spraynlog (me) I listed part #s and pics.

You can run 14-15lbs boost with this setup. It has been on my car for a couple years at least.

Because all of the "kits" contain basically the same components, they are all pretty much universal and will work on any vehicle.

Hahaha, I'll take that as a compliment! :) From his initial post, it sounds like you are recruiting people into the 'brotherhood of the misting nozzles'.

You might want to give my progressive alky kit out. For the price and technology behind the controller it can't be beat.

Spraynlog,, I really like the setup you have! Espically the price!! How well does this work for you? I know have had it on your car for a couple years so it's durable,, but did u notice a good power gain when u installed it? Also,, were there any other tuning issues you had to work out afterwards? Thanks for posting that info!!

dvldoc,, trrbojeep,, I looked at both of the websites you mentioned,, both companies look to offer quality products, thanks for posting about them,, good helpful info,, also a backup plan if I can't re-create what sprayinlog did.

Of course,, I may get lucky and not need alky to stop detonation after I get my larger injectors in there.... but then it'd just be for fun i guess.. hahaha

Thanks!!

I'll vouch for dvldoc's kit. I recently installed one on my car and am very impressed with the quality and how well it works.

The system performs well, you can tune it somewhat by turning the setpoint where it comes on up or down. I think of it mainly as a cheap bridge to allow extra boost on a log intake draw through motor. On the intercooled cars where boost levels are higher, it may be better to use a
more powerful pump & controls. The power gain is mostly related to allowing more boost, I couldn't run more than 11 psi or so without getting detonation before I installed it. I've run up to 16 psi at the track with a bit of race gas. On a cold night, (35 degrees) my car went into the high 14's but usually I get around 15.3xx on street tires.
You can also run straight distilled water in it if you run short of $$$ to buy alcohol. Do not let the pump run dry, or you will be buying another one.

Another question for u sprayinlog, that Hobbs switch you got from NAPA,, does it work off of manifold vac/pressure? Is that how it knows when to turn on/off depending on your boost levels? Or is it an electrical switch that you have to hook up differently?
Thanks again
Matt

Yes, it works off manifold vac/pressure.
The Hobbs switch is wired up to 'key on' power on one side and the washer pump on the other. It turns on and off at the pressure set point you adjust it to. They come set at 5 psi, I have mine set to turn on at 8 psi. You need to hook it up to manifold vacuum/pressure with a vacuum line, this is easy to do with a vacuum 'T'. Mine has been underhood for about three years now, no problems at all with failure or setpoint changes. A nice "set it and forget it" piece of gear.

dvldoc, i bought a shurflo pump from you for my water injection setup, i was unable to get it to keep a constant pressure with that adjuster hex that came with it, it just made it pulse on and off faster or slower but the pressure would still spike really high, what i ended up doing was using a flow control valve to bleed off alot of water and then turn up the pulse width till it was more constant and then use the bleed to control the pressure. is this normal for the pump to act like that? attached is a picture of the control valve i had to use

ANother question,, no matter what system you run,, homemade or store-bought.. how do you know when it's spraying at any given boost pressure? I mean,, your in the car driving down the road,, sure I can see my boost guage telling me what boost/vac is doing at any time,, but how do I know when my alky has kicked in?

Is there another guage I would need to give me some sort of real-time feedback as to when the alky pump switched on/off?? Or does the switch have a labeled setting that shows you what psi it will turn on at?

Thanks again for all the help/info!!
