Hi,

I have an 89 turbo caravan, and it makes some noises on deceleration.
We have narrowed it down to the bell housing area.
A look underneath revealed, well, what you see there. This bracket is like swung-back away from the transmission where it obviously belongs. Now sometimes when I am accelerating, the whole cabin shimmys right and left a little. This is sporadic.
Also when I let off the gas completely from like 2k rpm's+, or wind it up, there is a loud clattering that does not sound like valves or piston rods when it (the engine) winds down.
Thom thinks its the flexplate, and the tranny not being properly attached to the motor.
To further support this theory, tonight as I was parking it, the van was rolling forward like a very small amount as I threw it into reverse. It made an even louder clank-clank-clank, like 5 or 6 times I heard it before it stopped.
My question is, is not having that tranny to engine bracket on properly enough to cause all the symptoms I have listed?
or are there missing/loose bolts on the flexplate?
Thanks for your input!

paul

OH, and there is a picture of a vaccum hose sitting on the battery that comes from the throttle body and goes i dunno where, does anybody here know?

i would say that that the bracket is not causing your noise that is a strenghtening brace and looks to have been off for quite sometime as there is a bolt in the hole it belongs to.
as for the hose there should be a vac diagram under the hood that will tell you where it should go.

My '93 Shadow ES V6 / 604 makes a loud rattling noise like you describe. Mostly when idling and idling in gear. And when going from D to R or R to D. Very annoying, but a quick and small rev of the engine makes it go away for a few seconds.

I think it's a cracked flexplate.

Thanks fellas there are alot of bogus hose connections in there I have to sort through someone b4 me really messed it up bad.... We started to straighten out the vac lines, now it runs smoother when warm, but chokes when cold when i push the accelerator......We'll get it going though
On the tranny, it goes down the street and such so I'll wait til I figure out wh I'm rebuilding and what I'm replacing before I get to turning wrenches...
Thanks again!
OH, I had a charging issue where it would run on the batt then alt back and fourth. Figured out it was a bad connection to the brain, took it out cleaned it and the plugs as well problem gone battery gets charged great now very strong electrical power compared to before..

Check your torque converter bolts make sure thier not loose other wise it's probably the flex plate the only other thing I can think of is inside your tranny so like you said just drive it until you can wrench on it

I thought the vacuum line is for the vacuum reservoir, which looks to be missing, but with that check valve there I dunno.

ok we put the bracket back into place, and BOY, it make A LOT more noise!
This is kind of a relief, because it means the motor is better off than evident.
I've purchased another flexplate from Brian, and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail.
We are converting a T1 to T2 and putting it on maybe this weekend, if the compression check turns out ok. The tq converter bolts appeared to all be in all the way, so if the rattle is not from those being loose, maybe its the center cracked like Donovan's page shows? ? ?
