Shift linkage on 91 Shadow 5spd

Does anyone know how to remedy the slop in the level on the trans that is used to select gear (left right on the shift knob) Does that little lever just wear over time? I just replaced the bushings on the cable to remove some of the play but that lever has about 15° of rotation before it even turns the shaft in the trans. Do I just buy a new lever?
