I have heard a lot about the 555 and 550mpq being installed in the L-body, but has anyone put a 568/523 in one? Do they install about the same? I am debating all of the transmission options right now and can't make up my mind. I have 2 568's and a 555 and 523. Not sure which to use.

I am looking for a tranny that would be a good highway cruiser and not turn high revs in 5th. I like all of these trannies 4th gear which is the biggest gripe of mine about the 525. Going into 5th in the quarter sucks. They all seem about the same in 5th except the 523 with its 3.5 fd. I think it is going to go in my Vnt project anyways.

I thought I heard a while back that the 568/523 didn't fit very good. Is this true? I like how they shift.

I am also curious about the 550mpq. If someone has one of these how do they like it? I know they are very expensive, because of the quaife and moly plate, but what would a setup like that run me if I already have the 555? Maybe someone on here has been in my position and can help. Thanks, Pat

550mpq... cost

1 555 tranny
1 520 tranny same year
1 moly plate 135
1 quaiffe 1000
plus assembly

My buddy spent 1700 on the trans... But I am GREEN with envy.

568/523... No more of a headache than any other tranny to install into an "L"

BTW... THERE is NO reason to shift to 5th with a 525 unless you are running 115+ mph. You WILL slow down. 525 at 6k rpm in 4th is 111 mph with stock sized tires.

Ken,
Not in my car. In my car I am shifting into 5th at about 95mph. If my car would let me get that mph out of 4th, I wouldn't be interested in changing. It also really sucks shifting to 5th in a race, because the torque steer is pretty bad. I don't mind it too much at low speeds, but at close to 100 it can get a little nerve racking.

Then you have a 3.87 final drive 525. Shifting to 5th is always a bad idea when hammering it...

Swap to a taller gearset and you'll see quicker spool (more engine load) more mph and quicker et's

I had the 523 in my GLH and now there is a 568 sitting in it. I can't comment on the difficultly of the install as I didn't install it. I do know that the bobble strut/K-frame mounting is going to be the tough part.
