My daily driver has sold and out of necessity I must get my 1984 Lebaron Convertible on the road. It blew the 3sp auto last xmas eve and now I need to get it going. Its my understanding that I can only use 84-85 3sp auto non-locking trannys from behind the turbo engines, right? Or temporarily use a TBI engine tranny and disconnect the lockup harness plug and go easy with it. I'd just as soon put a turbo transmission in it but I do need a daily driver quick. I have a injured back so I inquired with a local mechanic as to what he'd charge to do the swap if I can find a turbo tranny. He said $360 to swap trannys and another $40$-75 to renew the front/rear seal before the swap. Sound fair?

Any turbo tranny will work, as long as it's pre-'87, '87-on have larger axles. You could use a later tranny, as long as you get the axles to go with it. A non-turbo tranny will work, just don't beat on it. $400-$435 sounds a little high, but I do all my own work, so I may be biased.

Crap, I just remembered that the 84-85 autos are unique. There's a company that makes "bastard" torque converters that would allow you to use a later tranny. I don't remember who it was, but someone posted it within the last week.

You may want to just inquire about having your transmission rebuilt.

You could PM turbokid, I think he's in the KC area & he's got a yard with a bunch of TD's.

I've considered a TBI tranny as a temporary fix but my back wont let me do the labor. I've tried PM'ing turbokid a few times but he doesnt respond. I have found a local established family owned shop that will give me a lifetime warranty on a rebuild (new casing if necessary!) including removal/install for $950. I plan on keeping the car so it sounds like the way to go with it being my daily driver for a while! Plus I found a nice matching burgandy parade boot so the homecoming queen can ride on the back this fall! Thanks.

I'd jump on that life-time warranty deal if I were you. I don't see how they stay in business. I personally wouldn't even warranty my Labor for life, even for a friend!
