I have heard from people that the phantom grip is not effective once you start putting down some serious power, is this true?? If so... why??

Thanks!!

I'm not sure if this is or is not true as I have heard the same....but never first hand. If indeed the Phantom Grip does loose "grip" then I would suspect materials first, spring tension second, and design third

I've heard they can be over powered as well. It's an affordable limited slip differential, but you get what you pay for. The Phantom Grip uses hardened steel blocks under spring tention to lock your spider gears together and keep both tires spinning, but if you over come the frictional grip of the blocks you'll have a regular differential with one wheel spinning.

I have been doing some testing on some of these units and have found that most of the time the advertised spring pressure is very incorrect and also have some issues with the hardness or softness of the blocks that are being made. I am having a machinist make some of these units to specs me and him have come up with, I have a few in being tested right now but don't have enuf information on the test vehicles yet.

Just a heads up...Rumor has it some individuals may have some legal issues concerning reverse engineering the Phantom Grip. I don't know the laws about copying them for private consumption vs. public sale. Just be careful.

cliff ramsdell is building me an a-525 hybrid with the phantom grip unit, he has a ton of experience with the setup and is very sure it is capable of handling up to 300 hp in everyday street or strip applications. i trust his opinion based on his long-term experience. but i will report back to this section of this site on what i experience with the unit on my glhs.

I'm not to concerned concidering that there are at least 3 other people making them and specifically the fact that I wouldn't be selling to many of them (very low key) but I know of one of our venders that has copys that are on his website for sale and WOW the really look like the Phantom Grip. Others I have seen look similar but there are a few differences in them shape and whatnot. I have also not stated who's units I have checked ie the phantom grip or other venders or whatever.

Phantom Grip does NOT have a patent on the design. Ford used the same style of LSD years ago, two plates and some springs that establishes prior art and they are lying if they tell you any different (as they are reported to have done in the past).

Well in that case maybe I should offer up my version for my introductory price of $175 shipped. It is nicer looking overall than the Phantom Grip and you select any spring rate you want.

With all due respect to Cliff as I know the he knows his stuff.....and this is where I would go myself if in need as he is the best, but he only can do so much with what is available to him....case in point, anybody remember the Future Auto fiasco?
