Hey guys...
I really really dislike the auto trans in my turbo mini.
I never see too much talk about converting an auto trans to manual in the vans.
The van is an 89' / 2.5T (basically stock setup) I have a trans cooler on the auto and changed the filter/fluid - I just think it shifts sloppy at best.

I am just looking for some input to see what is all involved. It would be really sweet to have a nice 5 speed in my mini... I do want to use the van as a light tow vehicle down the road as well.

I am really starting to think the auto trans costs some mpg's and the way it shifts makes me irritated (I have always driven 5 speeds)

SO... does anyone have a recipe for this?
Parts list?

Thanks!

Abstract-

I don't know the answer to this but have seen it discussed on this board before. Do a search or three and see what you come up with.

Yeah I have done a couple searches...
Oh and I found a RAM VAN in the yard yesterday... it is a 5 speed with the shifter and cables... even if that trans is a no go for this swap - wouldn't the cables and shifter be ideal to take and use with whatever trans I decided to use? Any idea? Seems like it would be a perfect fit.

Go to Donovan's Dodge Garage Gary has it pretty well documented. Basically swap the tranny, re-use the axles change pedals weld on shifter bracket and install cables.

A-543 in a Caravan. Am I crazy? No!!! Just Sensible

That is for the 3.0 V6. The 2.5 will be easier since you have mount available. The swap is pretty easy. The only Minivan specific pieces you need are the clutch pedal and maybe the trans mount. On mine I have a Neon shifter that is mounted about 8" higher then stock with a center console from walmart installed. Doesn't look that good but it works awesome.

If you use an A520/555 use the 89- shifter and cables, or get a 523/568 and use 90+ cables. Get the pedal assy and clutch cable, shifter, console, and sawzall the shifter bracket right off and weld it onto yours. Use any turbo flywheel and clutch for your year transmission (large spline or small spline).
