I am in the process of rebuilding my a-413. I am looking for a rebuild kit that is stronger than stock. I was looking at getting alto red eagle clutches for it and found a superkit with the clutches in it. I am still waiting on the price.
What I would like to know is this kits overkill or should I replace everything seeing I have it apart? The kit cantains clutches, steels, front band, gasket and seal kits. The tranny had 46,000 on it whan I tore it apart. I am hoping for 250+ out of the engine.

I bought mine from transtar, think it was ~$70 with a bunch of stuff. You will be fine with stock clutches but you need to set the clearance way tighter at least the minimum of the later factory spec which I think is .040". Make sure you have the 4 clutch drums then if you want you can put 5clutches in the front using steels from a '70 year trans and you may need a thicker snap ring. Ditch the wav snap ring for a solid one anyway.

I think there is an aftermarket band that says "high friction" or something and that is a good addition also from what a friend told me. The bands dont normally come in the kit, unless you get the huge kit with hard parts. A new rear band would be a good idea also as well as an over running clutch set.

Look on dbltrbl's webpage for most of the tricks

Where at in MI are you, I may be able to help you with it

Thanks for the information. I tried calling transtar, and after playing phone tag, all I got was an answering machine. So I'm waiting on a call back from them.

I'm in Battle Creek.

You can see the service manual with the specs on Carl's site or if you have $15 the ATSG is deff nice to have.

My buddy Steve Locket sells a rebuild/upgrade kit. He posts on Neons.org. I'll see him tomorrow in Maryland and get you more info.

Just got off the phone with transtar. $120 for a super kit. I asked about getting a extra friction and 78-80 steels and he said he didnt think the older steels would fit in the newer (89') hub. Do these steels fit in the way they come or do they need machining. I can do the machining if needed. I would like to know before ordering.

Thanks for the help so far!!!

Hey seriously take what DBLTRBL said to heart, I forgot that Steve was selling rebuild kits with good parts for a good price. Actually just found the great thread and he mentions selling a kit for $250, IMO its the best kit/deal you are going to find for race proven parts that wont let you down(He has pic of whats in it and its on page 4, 1/2 way down the page).
www.neons.org • View topic - built first gen auto tranny, am i missing anything

the steels for the front clutch are exactly the same, its just the 78-80 steels are thinner which allows you to fit 5 clutches instead of 4(assuming you have the "good" drum that holds 4 to begin with). You may need to use some reg steels to keep the clearance down.

Steve and I raced yesterday in Maryland. Sorry, I forgot to ask him about the kit. I can still get you in contact with him anytime.

Steve came in 2nd with a 10.018 best for the day. I came home on the trailer.

Yeah you prob dont need the alto front pack set either for your HP level, I'm just running with the 5 stock clutshes/78steels and I got the idea from another who likes them better and runs 10 sec 1/4 mile. That would make it cheaper as that alto stuff is expensive

you can PM him on here(not sure if he gets on here much anymore?) or neons.org, he goes by RacerStev on most of the forums, he's on most of them
