I am going to look at an '86 Daytona C/S today ( 3 hour drive away). The guy told me the 5 speed tranny started whining on his way home. He continued to drive 15 or so KM home and parked the car.

What kind of $$ would I be looking at to completely rebuild the trannny ( parts only - I'll do the labour ) assuming he probably buggered it up royally by driving for weeks with the noise not just from work to his home like he tld me.

The car will be a daily driver so stock or a little stronger will work.

He might be low on fluid. But if it is bad, I'd just go to pick your part and find an A520. It'll drop right in and is way cheaper and easier. I believe that car has an A525, which is a weak tranny. Parts for these trannies are pricy. I'm in Calgary. Where are you?

Just parts when I priced out the rebuild price of the 525 in my GLHS I came up to about $240. That was just an estimate since I did not have the info from the trans id tag.

That was JUST for parts, zero labor. It did NOT include differential side or pinion gears, pinion gear shaft, or proper shims. This price was bearing, seals, and blocker rings(brass or synchro rings).

The trans shop figured they could rebuild it for me for $400-450 if I brought them the trans out of the car. They did not take into consideration any parts the differential might need. This was all USD with a discount through my work, a Ford dealer.

Thanks for the info. I am in Calgary looking at cars this weekend. I live near RedDeer. The 2 cars I looked at are total junk. Toasted trannies and need of restoration not just a few repairs like the owners told me over the phone.

Then of course my Bronco died last night. I was going to dolly my new purchase home but now I am not so sure.
