Just finished putting my junkyard tranny in the Spirit today, and now it won't shift into park, will only start in neutral, and every gear is reverse, including neutral.........W.T.F.

I called the junkyard, and they said "Boy, ya sure did screw sumtin up".

They are supposed to send out a mechanic in the morning to look at it.

Has this ever happend to anyone else?

What could be wrong?

I did the same thing to my 76 dodge d100 when I did a neutral drop with it ( was the only way it would burn the tires with the slant 6 in it and I was 16 years old ) . The way it was explained to me is the clutched were welded together inside. I got it working by sticking the thing in neutral and standing on the brake and hammering on the gas a few times. I don't think you did anything wrong I think you just got a junk tranny.

Sounds like you need to adjust the throttle and shift linkages. If you can get a Chrysler Shop manual, it talks about this and tells you how to adjust it.

You probably also need to have the kickdown band and line pressures set. If the tranny has been setting up for along time, it would be good to change the fluid and filter, clean the valve body, and check the parking sprag for proper operation.

The Chrysler shop manual also suggest replacing the rubber gromets on the linkages. Since it only starts in neutral, the shop manual says to adjust the shift linkage. The car should start in Park and in Neutral. That's what the electrical connector is for on the front of the auto trans to indicate the shift position for starting. It also mentioned something about setting the reverse kickdown or band adjustment. I can't remember exactly. I still need to do some more studying. But will try to look it up if you would like.
