my tranny currently leaks where the driver's side axle (brand new) goes into the diff. my bro just said that i didnt push it in till it clicked. is that the reason, or do i need an "axle seal" (is that a gasket??) like in the picture. http://www.thedodgegarage.com/trans/trans_3.jpg

thanks for the help.

I know mine leaks but not from the seal but rather from around the edges of the bearing retainer. All I plan on doing is cleaning it up and RTV'ing it a new gasket when I change my D/S axle that I broke.

You probably need a new seal. They're easy to change (once you get the old one out).

It could also be that the seal area on the axle is nicked, in which case all the new seals in the world won't help you any. I had this problem on the Spirit ES I had. I just swapped it with the passenger side axle (which goes into the intermediate shaft, so no seal needed).

Even "new" axles can be scarred. The one I had was a reman, looked to be fairly new. It had a little scratch on the seal surface, going lengthwise on the axle. That's all it took for there to be an incurable leak.

you need to do 2 simple, cheap things:
1. install a new seal
2. polish and inspect the axle seal area (the outside diameter of the axle that meets the inside diamter of the seal). use a fine wire brush or fine sandpaper and buff/polish that axle o.d.

if the unit has a severe deep gouge, or dent, polishing wont do much good.....then you will need to replace that unit.
