Are you supposed to use fully synthetic motor oil in the 555's?

Yes, it is fine to run the synthetic in the 555's. I use mobil one 5w30 in winter and go to 10w30 for summer.

I wouldn't do it, but I don't think it will hurt anything if you do. I have Mobil1 synthetic 5-30 in my A555 and it is a bitch to shift when pushing the car hard. You really have to concentrate on shifting/clutching or it just won't let you into gear.

It can be too slippery for the snycros and make it harder to shift. Thats what I hear anyway. You might want to try some GM syncromesh fluid. Its what I run in the mustang and it did help it shift a little smoother.

I run 5/30 synthetic in my 555 and all the 520's I've had. Never an issue with shifting.

BUT, Cliff is the expert and he says to run regular 5/30 due to the "slippery" issue and shifting.

I want to try the GM Synchromesh, but that stuff is expen$ive. My brother uses it in his Olds Cutlass (Getrag 282 5spd) and there is a guy here in town that uses it in his Ford Taurus SHO. They both like it a lot.

The only time I have problems shifting the A555 in my Lancer is the 1-2 shift. If I wait too long and don't short shift into 2nd, it's really hard to go into gear. It seems like I really have to plant my foot all the way down on the clutch. It's like it engages to far down.....Maybe synth is not to blame?? Wrong clutch cable or worn synchros?

No...the shifting is fine....I was just a little concerned about my loud throwout bearing noise when the clutch is up, and thought I may have put in the wrong oil.

what ken said above is true...cliff highly recommends and uses only regular oil, not synthetic, in all his high perf tranys.

he just built me a custom hybrid a-525/555 and used regular high grade 5w-30 oil, not synthetic.

Throw out bearing is not affected by the oil. It is not lubricated by it. Has its own lube.

Royal Purple and Amsoil both make synthetic oils specifically for manual transmissions. Has anybody tried them?

I changed mine from syn. to reg 5w/30 when I change the end plate. It seems to shift better.
