hey guys im trying to figure this one out. this tranny is only maybe a year and half old, and it is now grinding in 1st and 2nd gear, not when shifting, but more of when i've got the clutch in and coming up to a stop light..it doesnt grind long, just a quick little grind and then it's in the gear, it never poop's out or doenst hold the gear, it just doesnt like to go in to gear when your driving slow or when it's cold...why do they do this?...and i can't remember on these car's the clutch activates at the top of the pedal is that normal....havent driven one of these in a while..

What type of fluid are you using in your transaxle?
Chrysler wants 5W-30 motor oil.

Gear Oil is WAY too thick.
5W-30 Conventional Motor Oil.
Some guys have used GM Syncromesh which apparently helps with hard shifting issues.

+1 on a lighter oil. 5W30 is all I would run in these trannys.

I like the 5-30 mobil 1 or a blend. The grinding is from the syncros either being worn or they are not slowing down enough as you shift, possibly the clutch isnt fully releasing, but thats a rare case.. Try the lighter fluid first.

hey guys i put the new oil in it, and it still grinds..not nearly as bad, but even when i'm just barely rolling ( i mean rolling slower then a toddler crawls) clutch pedal in i go to put it in first gear and it grinds pretty bad, it does it all the time either 1 or 2nd gear...and this tranny is brand new from forward motion, barely has 10k on it.... any advice?

Be sure all of your basics are correct before assuming the problem is in the trans.
Be sure the snap grommets on the shifter cables are not worn/broken so you are getting positive engagement when you shift gears.
Be sure the clutch cable automatic adjuster is working properly and the cable is not stretched.
Also be sure everything is routed/secured properly.

Which transmission is it?

So, say you're going about 5 mph and try pushing the shifter into first, does it give resistance and then grind and go into gear? Or when pushing the shifter, it just grinds with no resistance and pops in?

A friend of mine with an Escort GT had a 1st? maybe it was 2nd? gear synchronizer ring just grenade on him while driving down the highway. He was doing like 90+ mph and it went "ca boom". Didn't damage the rest of the transmission, but instantly after that, it'd grind instantly when putting it into that particular gear.

Supposedly shift fork pads can fall off and cause shift grinding, but I have not yet experienced that for myself.

Making one of these trannies "go out" is like trying to kill a tiger with a fly swatter unless there was no fluid in it and/or it was driven like an idiot. How did you do it?
