I tried to install my tranny plate, but I couldn't get one nut off. Once I had the cover off my tranny I removed the clip to one of the shafts and removed 5th gear I believe, but the other shaft has a big nut on it I think it was a size 1-1/8. I couldn't break it loose. Should I heat it up with a torch and try again? Or am I missing something? Once I get the nut off will that gear simply slide off too, or do I need a puller? This is a 89 A555 tranny. Please help. Thanks.

It'll slide off (at least mine did).

Notice how the gear has a little "flange" on it below the nut. I put a big pipe wrench on this and went to town with the breaker bar on the nut. Worked like a charm.

If you have a wrench that fits the "flange", it should be fairly easy.

I tried using a pipe wrench on that flange to hold it, but pipe wrenches don't fit it too well and with a breaker bar the pipe wrench couldn't hold the flange. That's a pretty big flange. I grabbed by largest crescent wrench, but that wasn't big enough. Hmmmm I don't know what I could use. I'll have to find a bigger wrench to hold that flange. Anyone know what size wrench I'd have to use? Or anything else I could try? Thaks.

I tried again. Fitted up the pipe wrench and pulled out hte breaer bar. Yes... it worked. Thanks for the help. That nut was on there pretty tight. Well, now my chromoly tranny plate is in. A little insurance for 3rd gear. Don't want to be swappin any more tranny's any time soon.

Nut is torqued to 190 ft/lbs, I believe, so yeah, that would be "pretty tight".
