Ok, I've been reading on the forum and I've got a Chiltons manual(which is just about worthless. It's got to cover 15 years of FWD Chryslers) about changing my Rack and Pinion. the seal on the drivers side is gone and I don't think it's worth it to just do the seal. Everything I see says to drop the K-frame. It's a J body car. I've changed FWD chryslers before, and did not drop the K-frame. On top of that , I looks like I can pull it straight out once everything's undone. I'm a little apprehensive about dropping the K-frame. Has anyone done this before or has everyone dropped the K-frame?

i was a Dealer tech from 1983 - 2000

Drop the k fram down. Leave the lower ball joints in. 4 bolts alot more room.
Some times we popped the lb's out and left the rack on the k-frame swapped it out on the jack.

If this helps at all, I was able to pull mine out through my driver side wheel well. Wasn't that bad, but I work at a shop with a lift and it might be difficult to some degree doing it on the ground.

Well, I finally got the holidays and a few other things behind me and changed the rack. I didn't drop the K member and had no issues. But, I found I've also got a bad power steering pump. Oh well, what can you expect for $500.

If a pump is run low on fluid and/or has to work too hard it will fail so your rack issue killed your pump.

Yeah. When I change the pump out, I'll do it right and change the hoses too.
