I was under the car yesterday and snuck a look in the space between the block and the tranny case and my flywheel has a tooth broken off! Is it common to loose a tooth here and there (please...no south carolina/redneck jokes )?

Could this be causing a virbration...or is it more likely that the vibration broke the tooth off?

The tooth probably got knocked off by the starter, possibly from trying to start while it wwas already running or a sticky bendix on the starter. I can't imagine such a small peice could cause a vibration, but the teeth are on the very outside, so who knows.

Yes, most definatley can cause a vibration! as minimopar says, you probably tried to start it when running or it backfired when cranking and it broke a tooth when it turned backwards.
