Any suggestions as to what could could be wrong? The car will not go in any forward gears or reverse. Could it be the clutch? Could it be the flywheel? I did go from stock to an aluminum flywheel.

Thanks, chris

did you adjust the shifter?

A. If not, you need to.

B. If so, did you tighten the adjusting screws on the cables enough?

Don't take this as an insult. My first clutch/disc change, I noticed how easy it was to do this. So I just put everything together to match how things came off the car.

Is it even possible to have the clutch in backwards and still get everything back together? Did you have the same type of problem with not being able to get into gear? Oh and this is for a 5 speed in a 86 GLHS

What do you mean it won't go into gear?

A) You can move the shifter as if it goes into gears, but nothing happens
B) Shifter doesn't move (unless using force), and tranny grinds (with engine running, ofcourse)

Like Dean said, if B), does it go into gear with the engine off?

sounds like the pressure plate is not applying force to the disc.... assuming you have the correct disc for the transmission, you should remove the clutch cable at the transmission and make sure the arm moves freely.... feel for spring pressure by trying to pull up on the arm... or maybe you forgot to install the clutch disc (seen stranger things...like the guy that forgot to put in his inner brake pads)

additional thoughts, throw out bearing not properly installed holding pressure against pressure plate thus releasing the clutch at all times, new flywheel face is farther back from the engine than the original thus putting the pressure plate farther into the trans and putting pressure against the throw out bearing and holding the clutch released.

How can you tell if the throw out bearing is not installed properly?

Does the clutch pedal feel about as firm as it did before? Or does it take more/less pressure to push it down? Also, with the hood open and the car idling in neutral, push the clutch pedal down then let it up a few times. If the clutch is indeed grabbing, you'll be able to hear a faint "whirring" sound when the clutch pedal is up.

As far as the throwout bearing being installed incorrectly, I would think that it would make some AWFUL sound if the fingers on the pressure plate were up against anything other than the bearing, but I could be wrong. And just like the other guys said, just double-check for the stupid stuff. It happens. Hell, about a month ago, I was changing the oil on my brothers new Hemi Ram, ran in the house for a phonecall halfway through it, came back out and put 7 fresh quarts of oil on my damn garage floor!
