I just bought this 88 Daytona Shelby Z. After realizing that YES it DOES have reverse, LOL, i go on to the next problem. It has no 5th gear and it will let me shift into the 6th Position, This normal?

I am confused why a 5th gear would be gone when it doesnt carry much load and the car was still stock, so HP vs Resistance was not the case.

Should i go ahead and pull the tranny and send it to the shop? Any ideas guys?
Thanks alot Il actually get to legally drive this thing and get over 15mph in it soon!

Follow the cables to the trans and make sure ALL the clips are holding the cables from wiggling at the clip spots!

Well yeah we got it into reverse while limpin it around my driveway. When i got it from a car auction it didnt have a shifter nob and this is my first TD so i had no idea. It went into that "6th" gear so i thought it was in reverse. Now that i know where it is reverse worked fine, but 5th was still not there. My cables do not have any clips or anything and are held pretty solid, everything looks to be ok when watching the cables shift the transmission.

How did you adjust your cables? Someone do it for you?
Before they were adjusted did you watch them shift your tranns? (someone else in the car shifting) What did it do?
thanks for any help

You can adjust the cables on the base of the shifter.

There's small carpet inserts on the bottom of the center console. Pull them
out (both sides) and you'll see the ends of the cables (slotted for adjustment with 8mm head screws) on the base of the shifter.

You are supposed to pull the trigger below the shifter knob to be able to
put it in reverse (which is on top on your left). If not, cables need to be
adjusted

If you look on top of the transmission from the front of the car you'll see a small spike sticking straight up. Remove this "spike" with a 10mm wrench, turn it over and thread it back into the transaxle. It will lock the transaxle between 1st and 2nd so that you can then pull the center console out of the car and adjust the ends of the shift cables so that the shifter is up against the reverse lock out (white plastic bit) between 1st and 2nd. Once that is done and everything is snugged up you can flip the pin back over and try 5th gear again.

If you still can't get 5th gear then I think the fork that actuates 5th gear is broken inside the transaxle or the gear/syncro themselves are shot. Any of our suppliers can rebuild a transaxle for you or provide you with the parts to do it yourself.

Hope this helps,

When i try to put it in 5th, it goes alot farther forward than it would if it was in 3rd. Would this be a broken shifter fork inside the trans?

Sounds like the set screw that holds the 5th gear fork in place has fallen out or broken. They're threadlocked in, though...

Yes, you'll have to take all the 5th gear stuff off anyway.

Please Help!

Ok. Ive never had a transmission apart before. but this is what i see.
I took the cover off the back of the trans. The shifter fork, has a rod through it (which has a very small pin in it) that is connected to the other side of the plate. Where the very small pin goes through the rod, it is broken. I dont think it is supposed to be like this. The rod is not connected to anything on the other side of the bearing support plate. I assume these two peice of rod (one chunk in the shifter fork, and one sticking out of the plate) should be connected?

If so, what transmissions share these parts? thanks!!!!!!!

oh, and my bearing support plate is 1/8" thick, is that stock?

Yes, sounds like your 5th gear rod (don't know the proper name) is broken in two.. Wow!

The rod is supposed to have a hole in it where the set screw that sits in the fork goes through. That holds the fork in place.

I don't know what other trannies share that rod, but I'm guessing the A520's do since they're pretty much identical to A555's internally.

My stock plates measured about .160" ('87 and '89 A555).

Yeah its broken right at the pin.

What cars came with the A520?

Pretty much any '87-'89 5 speed car (other than TII's and TIV's and '89 turbo vans).

PM Cliff Ramsdell (TurboGLH, I think).. He might have one laying around.
