In my TII GTC, A555 equipped, I notice that it whines a bit. Not enough to get on your nerves, but it does. Decelling especially. Also getting kinda "notchey" as far as shifting, especially from idling in Neutral, and putting it in 1st. I tend to go Neutral, to 2nd, to 1st. Brand new Hi-perf. clutch is in, and the Car has only 61,000 Original miles. My TII Daytona, that I have let run bone dry on two occasions, doesnt whine abit! So...how much is too much?

Check your fluid. Mine did that when it was leaking.

Not trying to be rude, but this goes in the trans forum not the forum for Suspension, Brakes, Tires, and Wheels.
+1 on the fluid, maybe it's time for a flush too

Whoops! Ok.. thought it was in the right department. Hmmm, if its leaking, then it must be leaking into a paralell universe, because there is nary a drop to be seen!

Or leaking when in motion. Checking the fluid level could prevent damage, like my grinding 5th.

Does the whining change when you shift, or does the pitch follow the speed of the car? If it's the latter, then the bearing on the main shaft is probably going. If it follows the speed of the engine, then it's probably not a big deal. 1st and 2nd are quite coarse and both my A555 and A568 whine like a John Deere in those gears. The noise pretty much goes away in higher gears.

I guess I notice it more when decelling third, to second, to first. At highway speeds you cant hear it, but thats because of the wind I guess..I will dbl check the fluid levels, see what happens. I topped that thing off before it went into Winter hibernation, havent driven it but twice this year, and no leaks...the Trnny on the TI 91 Daytona is "BMW silent"...not a peep, same thing for the other TII Daytona...quiet, good shifting car. Man, it would be shame such a low miles car to have tranny problems! (as in disintegrating from within!)

The key is, does the pitch of the whine change with the engine or the car. That will tell you which shaft is making the noise.

Its following the speed of the engine basically...not getting louder, or grindier (is that a word?) and the faster I go, it kinda fades into normal background noise. I checked the level, and it was a 1/2 liter low....and that somewhat improved shifting qualities, so I guess I didnt totally trash it!
