i read this on a honda forum, and just drained the fluid, removed the pump and cut the lines on the rack, all of them, as long as youre not pushing the fluid around while steering, it works like a manual rack, i havent had any issues yet.....

If you have a Reman manual rack, the coupler going up to the steering column is different, I have been told that there are at least 3 different manual rack couplers (size and spline difference), There is a neon manual coupler that is a recall part (thousands still available), and if it has the same spline count you can take the two couplers apart and mate the together (the lower manual neon coupler and the factory PS upper coupler) I have done this a few time and not really that hard just takes some time and tools. if you need any specific info let me know, Hope this helped.

But if you do that you fail to see that there is a different ratio between the two and the manual rack will be easier to steer with.

true, theres an easy ratio and hard ratio of both, i think the power racks are 14:1 and 18:1 and the manuals are 18:1 and 22:1. 2.5 turns lock to lock is the easier ratio for power rack, and seems to work well

Will I run into the same problems on a shadow? I thought you could just buy a manual rack and it would bolt right in to the column.

The spline on the manual rack is much smaller and will not just bolt up.

The neon only had a manual rack one year and that was 1995, so that may be hard to locate used, but if you go to the dealer they should be able to locate the parts you need.

You can try the dealer or boneyards if you want to - I struck out on that 2 years ago. So, I made my own - here's the details - Manual Rack Coupler Thread
