Review? No Problem. Here we go.
Got them as you see in the 1st picture, fresh from the outdoors. Dirt in the lugnut holes (some), and the clearcoat peeling. I used Eastwood's "PRE" to clean off the vulcanized rubber and years of gunk on the inside of the rim. That with the wire wheel worked nicely. Same with the back side of the rim, cleaned all the brake dust and junk off there.
-I noticed the machining grooves in the wheel and didn't have any acid to dip them in to clean them up and keep the grooves, so I just sanded all of them off.
-Started with a wire wheel, and cleaned all the loose clearcoat off the wheel as best I could. I used the bottom of a barstool without the seat part (just a frame) and the wheel fit perfect.
-Used a random orbital sander with 320 grit paper and sanded the wheel face, bead, and lip. All of the machining marks got sanded off. Elapsed time: 3 hours
-Moved up to 400 grit, wet sanding with my ipod and frosty alcoholic beverages to pass the time. Yes, I have CSI on my ipod. Along with all 4 seasons of The Office. \m/ Sanded just enough to get the swirl marks from the 320 off. Elapsed time: 1 hour
-Moved up to 800 grit, same routine. Sanded enough to remove the deeper scratches from the rougher paper. Elapsed time: 1 hour
-Moved up to 1000 grit Elapsed time: 1 hour
-Moved up to 1500 grit. Elapsed time: 45 minutes
-Moved up to 2000 grit. No need to spend a lot of time with this paper, it's like sanding with copier paper. Elapsed time: 20 minutes.
-Let the wheel dry, and helped it with a chamois cloth (prounounced shammy, sham-moy for those more articulated types). Used Mothers aluminum and mag polish, on the applicator and on the rim to let sit for around 10-15 minutes (it'll turn black)
-Used a harbor freight orbital polisher to remove it. Elapsed time: 15 minutes
Total time per wheel: Around 7.5 hours. My initial estimate was a bit off.
When I get all of the wheels done I am coating them with POR-15 Glisten PC. This should prevent me from having to keep repolishing the wheels every week. I'll post pics up afterwards.
