I was wondering if you guys would know if it was possible to take the abs master cylinder off and use a regular master cylinder in its place?

Tonight on the way back from the gas station the brakes started to act a up a bit, like really sluggish. Then when I Parked the van at the house I had to put the brakes all the way to the floor before it actually stopped. So my dad and I came to the conclusion that the master cylinder finally went.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Kevin

P.S. I did however check on prices for it and the only website that even has the abs Hydraulic Unit is rockautoparts.com and they list it at re manufactured for $500. I just don't have the money to replace something like that.

I wouldn't see why you couldn't just take the Master cylinder and the prop valve from a non-abs van from that era. What I would do is go to the local yard and look for a van like yours that does not have the ABS on it and take the master cylinder out of it and the proportion valve since it will not have the extra ports. Good Luck.

thanks for replying that fast.

I have a pretty good knowledge of cars, trucks, and vans but not to sound like a moron but what is a proportion valve and what does it look like? Plus what do you mean by the "extra ports".

Well, the proportion valve is the metal block that can be found bolted to the side of the engine bay and it is under master cylinder. It should have 6 lines running to it on non-abs cars and have 8 on the abs cars (I think) But the 2 lines that come out of the master cylinder go into the block and then the other lines go to all 4 wheels. (that is on the non-abs cars, I have not done much work on the abs cars, so I do not know for certain what they have) And what I meant by extra ports are the extra ones needed for the abs pump.

No problem, more then willing to help. I had a lot of brake troubles with my Rampage prior to selling it, and I finally had gotten it all figured out then the engine blew up. But if you have anymore questions, let me know and I am happy to help figure it out, if I could give a few people a call that may have a better idea.

That be cool if you could, I personally dont know of anyone that has even the slightest clue about brake systems in vehicles like this, the only one that even knows anything really about cars is my uncle but he only deals with old hot rods, lol.

yah, I have had all sorts of different issues with these car's brake systems, so I have gone through and read all sorts of information on them from service manuals and have taken time to look at alot of different years and have redone all sorts of brake combos on my cars so I have had a little experience.

Once i mess with this master cylinder it will be my first major brake job, otherwise i do tranny's and engines.. a few misc. interior upgrades, and minor body work.

Yah, I am what most call a jack of all trades, I have done a lot of engine work, some trany work, interior work, and a lot of heavy body work (rust fixes), but I also do quite a bit of wiring work as well, so I have a little experience on it all. Ironically, my brothers all went to college for auto tech, and I went for food science. Could have gone to some of the top auto tech schools in the nation, but didn't want to make my hobby my job, because I would be afraid I would never want to work on my toys.

You wouldn't know how to depressurize the system would you?

Before I can even take the ABS Hydraulic Assembly off, I must depressurize the system, and I have no idea how to do that.

Also do these ABS Hydraulic Assemblies fit any other vehicles besides the voyager like cross reference vehicles?

ha ha.... you wont believe this, i may be wrong but i think i have a leak on the driverside rear wheel, i have alot of brake fluid on the ground under the drum area, and not a little puddle either, its a good amount.

But I still cant fix the line without depressurizing the system..damit

sounds like bad wheel cylinder. Really easy fix. Just be careful when removing the line from the back of it, they tend to like to snap off.

You don't have to de-pressurize the brakes. Just fix/ replace what's broken, and then bleed the brakes when you're finished. Have someone who's done it before help/ watch or do it for you. Don't play around with the braking system, as it's not just your life, but everyone else on the road that you have to think about. Have fun and be safe!!
