can you run a power steering rack with no belt on the pump or is the only way to eliminate the belt by putting in a non power rack?

Sure, just remove the belt.

Steering effort will be greatly increased and you'll probably be putting the belt back on within a few days.

i bought an 85 glht with 4k miles and at 30 k miles the power steering pump took a crap so i removed the belt and drove that car until 1997 and to almost 300k miles (yes, 300 thousand miles) with no power steering belt and i got very used to it, its a little more effort but not that bad, even my 100 pound g-friend drove it a lot that way.

the pulley bearing went out, some fluid leaked but not all of it. i never actually removed that busted pump, just the belt. the car is still be driven by a girl in Cameron, Texas (50 miles south of Waco), same family as the one i sold it to nearly 6 years ago.....that car might last forever.

When I got my omni 2+ years ago the power steering was leaking so I just cut the belt. I deliver pizza 50 hours a week and the steering doesn't even bother me. I'm sure the weight of the car defintely helps though.

If you really wanted to keep it but not use the belt you could purchase a highrpm electric motor and run it off of that.
But yea when i blew my first headgasket we had to tow it home with my brothers truck "its sad to see a Turbododge being towed by a little mazda" and it didnt have any power steering.
HOLY CRAP it felt like i was fighting to turn a 40,000pound boat driving in cement.

i have blown a p/s hose and a rack on two seperate occasions and had to cut the belt in order to stop the pump from runnign dry. The effort needed is alot greater, but it is okay to do. I now haev a new rack and it works great
