Question Suspension Problem

I own a 96 mit eclipse , whenever i turn the steering wheel to the right or to the left it makes a horrid creaking noise, sounds like your opening a old creaky door. Then after making the turn and hearing the creaking noise I have to turn the steering wheel back to straighten the wheels, it wants to stay turned. I replace both the outer tierods and checked the power steering fluid , all is fine. Does anyone know what the prob might be? Someone at work suggested it might be the strut bearings , but I have no clue. Any info or advice is greatly appreciated. Could the ball joints be causing this problem??

Could be strut bearings, but more likely ball joints. I just went thru this on my 98 Dakota and it was the ball joints.
