Ok.. I just ordered up a set of 16x7 rims for my Daytona. This car came stock with 205/60-15's on it, on 15x6 of course. My math shows that tire to have a 627mm diameter. And it's obviously 205mm wide (8.07"). Now, the tires I WANt to put on the new rims.. 245/45-16's. That would give a diameter of 626.5mm.. REALLY close to stock! But that's an extra 40mm of width when the rim is only 25mm wider.. Am I asking too much of the new rims? I've stuck 225's on the stock rims before.. I'm just trying to get some wide paws on this car for cheap..

a 7" wide rim would be plenty good to accept a 245 tire, as lon as u dont have rubbing issues

Brian, Reeves has been running 245's on 6.5" crabs on his 88 daytona for years. I believe they are 245/50/15's.

Una, the best thing to do is check the mfgr's specs on the tire you plan to buy. tirerack.com has all the info. The specs will tell you their recommended wheel width range. If all out cornering and handling is the goal then the 7" wheel is not optimal for a 245, you would be better off using a 225 on a 7". It is usually better to spread out the tire on a wider wheel than to squeeze a wide tire on to a wheel that is too narrow, the reasoning is that there will be better sidewall support. If you are going for the look, then yes that size should be fine.

I'm not going for handling/cornering. I'm going for traction in a straight line.

i think 245 would be ok, bein such a low profile there isnt gonna be alot of sidewall roll anyway, i can tell ya alot of new trucks and jeeps have 245's on rims no wider than 7". i think i seen a beamer with 245 45's or 40's roll through the shop the other day, if its done from the factory then it has to be ok, what size do srt4's run? i think those rims are 7's or maybe even 6.5's.

be careful not to over-generalize and conclude that since some factory offering had a 245 on a 7, that its OK... or that you have seen or heard people running 245s on 7s .. so it must be OK

the other major factor here is that profile of the tire !! the proper rim width (range) for a 245/75-16 is different for a 245/45-16

follow csracer's advice - check out tirerack.com or the manufacturers website(s) , each tire size has recommended rim widths.. if you go to the wider end of the recommended, you will have quicker steering and little worse ride; if you go to the skinnier end of recommended, you get little better ride and little slower steering..

similarly, if you mount your tire on the skinniest of the recommended, you may see quicker wear to the centre of the tire; if you mount it on the widest, you may see quicker wear on the outer portions of the tread

Don't go too cheap, if anything, these cars need the stickiest rubber possible.

Actually low profiles make it worse because they don' thave any room to buldge over the width of the rim.

My 205/45/16 Sumitomo HRZII tires actually say "don't mount on 6.5" rims" right on the tire.
