The task: Install a '87 TII wiring harness in a '86 TI G-body

The problems:

1.) Near where the harness penetrates the radiator support on both sides are three wires. These wires have female spade connectors and each side has a red, a lavender, and a black with white stripe wire. Did these go to the flip up headlights some how? Shall I just cap them off?

2.) Baro solenoid wiring. The harness does not plug into the 4 solenoids on the passenger side fender. The connectors are different. Does the '87 TII G-body have four solenoids there also? If so, I should be able to just install the four solenoids out of an '87 car and plug them in, right?

3.) Is the starter sub harness different? I have one plug (I think it's a six wire plug) coming from the '86 starter sub harness that doesn't plug into the main harness. This would have the sds wiring and what not. I imagine I need to use an '87 TII starter sub harness?

4.) Just above my charcoal canister is a black round canister thingy. It has two wires coming out of it, one red, one black. It also has a vacuum type rubber hose - about 5/16". It says FIAMM on it. Did this have something to do with the air conditioning? Just toss it in the trash?

Also, regarding the solenoids, since I will be controlling the wastegate with a Grainger valve, are these really necessary? Would I get any codes or other issues if I just leave them off the car without plugging in any wires? I would imagine the baro solenoid would send a code??

And finally, the external MAP sensor - I still need one. If I go to AutoZone and buy one will it have provisions for mounting it to the fenderwell or will I need to find a bracket from an '87 car?

Thanks for reading this long post!!

couple ways to make this easier on yourself. first, tell us if you're simply modding for a t2 in a first gen set up (in other words, why do the whole harness). you might get more specific answers if we know why you're using the 87 harness.

I've got a complete T2 setup in my first gen, with proper mods to the original T1 harness. works just as well and was no sweat modding. that said, now I can offer a few answers.
1. no clue.
2. I'm pretty sure in 87 they went to 3 solenoids combining purge & egr. what you do there depends on your vacuum harness (and whether you're running egr). I'm not running an egr system any more, my vacuum harness is constructed accordingly. see remainder of post.
4. the FIAMM thing is I believe for the factory air horn if I remember correctly. my car has one, don't know how many of these there are. could be way off here.

don't know how familiar you are with this swap (if this is what you're doing). if not at all, check Gary D's site for the page. when I did it I bought the parts from him (RP) and he walked me through it, saved massive headaches this way.

to make this easiest on you, if you simply are going full t2 spec - use a GLHS logic module. matches LM harness properly, just need to rewire for AIS & TPS. keep the in-cabin map sensor. keep your solenoids as is (don't remove wiring, you will get codes), keep your purge and baro solenoid vacuum set ups as is, and put the g-valve in the vacuum harness where the wastegate solenoid was. (not so) short & sweet.

No, this is a complete '87 TII harness in an '86 TI vehicle. The TI harness was hacked up and I didn't want that headache.

OK, if the '87 used three solenoids instead of four, I think I can get the rest in shape.

Any other insight deeply appreciated.

1) I think this is the headlight motor, as you suspect.

2) The 87 has two solenoids here. The canister purge and EGR solenoids are combined in 87, like xtz said. The 2nd solenoid would be the wastegate actuator solenoid. You 86 has the separate purge and EGR solenoids. The 4th is the baro-read solenoid. On the 87, the baro-read is attached to the same bracket as the MAP sensor, which is attached to the strut tower. You 86 has the MAP sensor in the logic module.

3) The connector may have changed, but the wires running through there should all be the same. The only difference may be the manual vs automatic back-up lights and lock-out switch.

4) That's the pump for the air horn. Chances are it's frozen-up anyway, but you to can hook 12V up to it and see. The single wire (green and/or black I think) is the positive feed to the horn (regular or air). If the motor works, you can hook this wire to the positive terminal on the motor and ground the other side to the chassis.

1. headlight wiring red = high beam, lavender = low beam, black/white = ground.
2. 87 only has 2 solenoids, purge and waste gate on T2, third solenoid is under MAP sensor and is Baro/MAP.
3. may be different, could be auto to manual differences, could be that a number of changes occured 86-87.
4. Air horn compressor.
Solenoids, leave the waste gate there so LM will sense it.
MAP sensor, bracket and solenoid not included, any 87 up turbo should have it.
