Stock Stereo Illumination Change?

Anyone know how to change the illumination on a stock AM/FM cassette from green to amber? I don't want to put a nice CD player in the GLH and loss it or a window. I was wondering if maybe a wire change to the illumination of the stereo was needed?

I would suggest picking up a cassette unit from a 95-2000 Stratus which have factory orange displays. While you are at it, pick up a 6 disc changer that can be operated by the stock radio. My friend that lives in Westerville put the changer in his wife's 98 ES and it sounds good considering it is a stock radio and stock speakers. (the changer mounts in the console under the radio on the cloud cars... maybe you could mount it under the passenger seat.)

Thanks. Is your buddy in Westerville into TD's? I want use the stereo I have rather than spending $50-$100 for the Stratus stereo. My yards get Stratus and Cirrus but the stereos are always gone no matter what it is. I remember from school, changing the voltage on an LED would make it red or green and I was hoping someone knew these stereos enough and the wire to switch or maybe a resistor to put inline. My in-dash wiring is a mess because some knuckle-head cut the wires. I just got the correct ones out of a yard car and it is set up correctly.

Yes he is... he has my old Flame Red 94 Dakota SLT SWB RC sporting a 5.2/auto with MP headers, PCM, 2"/2" drop and 17" Dak R/T wheels along with a CLEAN Black 86 GLH he bought of ebay last spring. IT was sold new at Trader Bud's and was in Canal Winchester when he got it. Other that trashed clearcoat on top it is amazing. Looks like it never saw winter. Interior is insanely clean and shows no wear. Nice ride....

As for the LED ?.... not that I am aware of unless the LED was designed to change colors by reversing polarity or changing voltage. However.. I could be wrong as it has been 15 years since I messed with LED's. I think those displays are not LED's but some other type.

I understand the limited budget... been there, still there.....

BTW.. I used to live in Gahanna and most recently the Polaris area.

First- I am in the Polaris area right now. I would like to meet you buddy with the GLH sometime. I dailey drive a red one that is T2'd.

Anyways, I guess the principle I was looking to alter is, whatever voltage coming to the illlumination wire at the radio connector so the radio would change color. In the IT industry, equipment with LED's tell you all sorts of info from the flashing pattern of the different colored light. It isn't a diferent bulb or LED. The LED or bulb is given changes in voltages. Maybe I am trying too hard for something that can't eb done. I was also thinking of tearing apart a stock AM/FM to find/trace the illumination wire. Like I said, maybe I am trying too hard. It's just one little thing to mess with on the car. As we all do by altering something the factory never engineered for OUR car.

It's had limited road time since he purchased it. His name on here is "overclocker" and his name is Tim. Don't expect to see it out til spring... much too nice to take out.

The GLH is black with burgandy interior. Just repainted (including bumpers in body color) currently without any lettering. All stock for now....

You might see this truck around.. it was mine but he bought it in May of 2004 when I decided to move and go to school

Those pics are at my old place off Old Powell Rd.

See my other post in the thread and drop him a PM... he would enjoy a conversation with another FWD Mopar freak. Wait...uhh.. Oh, I...uh... mean... FWD Mopar fan

Seriously... the last time I looked at a stock radio display it was not LEDs, they were electro-luminescent (spelling?) and had a green film over the back of the radio face to change the color from white/blue to green. That being said.... might be possible to use a flood gel from theater lighting or some other clear colored plastic to change the display BUT that does not change the rest of the lighting (and would drive me nutz) ... just thinking outloud here....

WOW- Adam is a stones throw from there. I think I may have seen that truck around. The wheels and bed cover give it away.

Chrome grill and bumpers too. Most tweaked Daks tended to be sports with body-colored grill and body colored or black bumpers depending on year. I worked out at Easton and it was my commuter. Man... it was a fun ride

Also, during the summers of 92 + 93 you might have saw a green 68 Plymouth Sport Fury... that's still mine and in storage at the in-laws in Sunbury. Here's a pic...

I see. I haven't had one of these apart yet. The film is a good idea except the next question is the clock display is also green. I was hoping to change one by altering the input and therefore change both. To think out loud, I wonder if I could get a film from a cheaper Neon AM/FM and swap with the green in mine? Hmmmmmmmm. Those are lying around me.

Well... man.. how to say this. Radio uses clear bulbs and blue-ish white display. The material that gives the display and lettering on the face its color is in the face itself on the older radios I have messed with (including several infinity units) My suggestion on the film was for the clock display which does have a green film (I think) over it to tone it down and give a more green/blue color.

On that note... If you can get a neon radio cheap, could you adapt the entire face over the body of the other radio? Or swap the display?
