I have an autometer coolant temp gauge (one of the bling ones from mopar). Can I screw it in where the smaller one is on the front of the block? Its my understanding that the small sender on the front of the block is for the oem gauge and the one on the side of the T-stat housing is for the computer. Is this right? If so I assume that leaving the small one unhooked would just cause the gauge not to function...which is gravy seeing as I am going aftermarket anyway

You are correct, the one on the head is just a sender for the factory gauge and is 1/8 NPT, you can simply attach the wire from the autometer gauge to this sender or swap out the factory sender with the autometer one. You will need to drain the coolant for the swap to the autometer.

It's all gravy!
