Remaking gauge cluster: Anybody know HOW?

I have seen it on another forum (neons.org, user REKIII) that they replaced the entire gauge cluster with a custom one using a piece of aluminum sheet, cut to shape, and inserting off the shelf gauges in there.

I would love to do this with my minivan as not to put all these extra gauges all over the top and sides of dash. Plus, I dont trust those gauges and they arn't exactly easy to read at night.

anybody have the skinny on how to (especially fuel, speed, etc)?
