I just was given a 1984 shelby charger and its in great shape, runs good, etc. I brought it home the other night and it started up fine and then I drove it about 10 miles and when I got it home, I turned off the motor and the radiator fan kept running. I tried starting the car up again and turning it off and it still kept running. Due to it being late when I got home, I just unhooked the battery and it went off. Any ideas why it might have done that?

A free Shelby Charger that's cool! I wish i good get that lucky.

you may want to check and see if someone hard wired a switch to the electric fan to keep it on after the car turns off or even a timer.

A lot of people will put a switch or a timer on the fan so it runs after the car is turned off to help cool the engine down faster. I would trace the two wires that go to the fan motor if they go right into the wiring harness and look for any sign of splicing. I have always put a toggle switch on all my Turbo cars so I could cool them down faster between runs.

I do remember certain older vehicles used a "run after" cooling fan switch. The fan would run for a few minutes after the vehicle was shut off and then it would shut off by itself, this is normal operation.
Somebody on this site will be able to shed more light on which vehicles they were.

The early cars had a radiator fan delay timer on the heater or AC case. This would run the fan for a time after the engine was turned off. In later models Chrysler decided it wasn't needed and did away with it. I am not sure of the exact year they stoped it in, but my 81 Omni had it, my 85 LeBaron doesn't.

It is normal for the 84's, my 84 Rampage had the same mechanism. When I bought the car the guy that owned it before me thought that it was the bad relay, but the switch worked fine, and after about 5 minutes once the engine is turned off, the motor will stop. Nothing to worry about. And I would love to get a 83 1/2 or 84 Shelby Charger or early Turismo, I prefer their style of tail lights to the newer style. I like the swept back look.

This is programmed into the power module of Carbed motor cars, i know all the rampages and chargers and tourismos do this , mainly its to cool it down because they tend to run warm. my Rampage does it also
