So here is the deal. I just did the T2 swap in my 86 Omni and converted it over to 87 electronics. I got eveything hooked up and the car starts just fine. The only problem I noticed is the first time I hooked the battery up sparks shot out from the terminal and I saw smoke coming from somehwere behind the battery but then it went away. I couldnt find where it came from so I started the car and didn't think about it. Car runs and drives great, alt gauge says its charging, however the battery is not getting charged. Turns out I melted the red fusible link for the alternator when I hooked the battery back up so the car was running fine, but only off battery power. When the car is started and I unhook the terminals it dies immediatly. So I fix the fusible link and go to hook up the battery again and the terminals do the exact same thing, they spark like mad. So I pull them off quickly before I melted the fusible link again but now I am stumped.

I have checked and rechecked all the grounds on the car and they are good (FWD ground wire kit installed) I am running a newer ND alternator, so I added and extra ground wire to the alt because the newer ND's have two grounding posts unlike the old alternators. I am fairly possitive that I have the correct power line to the alternator on the correct post. I was running this ND alternator before I did the T2 swap and it was charging just fine before. So what should I be looking for here?

on my omni the radiator was slid all the way over and was hitting the alternator field wire terminal posts

a quick check would be to disconnect the alternator sub harness and see if you still have the short ..

Yeah, the alternator was sparking off the radiator, I forgot to mention that, but I added the plastic piece that prtects the post which I have previously removed and the sparking hasnt happened again since then.

Also for got to mention that I have tried swapping the pm and no change.
