I've been messing with fiberglass a bit and my plan is to install the traveler above the vents on the center console. I'm actually going to have 3 travelers up there. I'm going to take the displays off of the circuit boards and attach them to a piece of MDF board side by side. It's going to be a little work, but it'll look cool molded to the dash for a more or less factory look (I'm not going to have the texture in my dash anymore, going to fiberglass the whole damn thing). I got the travelers for free from the junkyard, tested them all out by splicing into the ECU harness under the hood. And just like you and I both hated cycling through the functions of the old digital dash, I hate cycling through the traveler, although I mostly just need average mpg. But with the 3 up top, I'll have average mpg, instantaneous mpg, and miles left on tank. I don't need to know the time the car's been running and the digital odometer will be in the dash. I just need to find a spot inside the dash to house the 3 circuit boards. I bought very nice ribbon cables to not only connect all the pins for the displays, but also to extend the wiring to the buttons. I also have tiny surface mount buttons to use instead of the gigantic buttons on the original traveler. I'll have 5 buttons, 3 will alternate each display respectively, one will change all 3 to metric and back, and the 5th will reset it all.
It's based on this look, although mine'll be half as tall. The digital travelers may be 3" or so tall in the case, but the displays are only about and inch and a half tall.
If ANYONE knows who's car this is, can they PLEASE let me know or ask them to contact me. I met the guy at SDAC when I went but I'm forced to work every saturday now and can never make it to another meeting.
Let me know what you guys all think.
