odometer not working?

my odometer stopped working on the 91 spirit r/t the other day but the speedo has maintained working the whole time?
what can cause one part to stop and the other to keep working? speed distance sensor?

its the spedometer itself thats failed. both are an integrated unit, if the odometer is working, then the SDS is fine.

odometer gear inside the speedo.

It's a 20 tooth gear that has a tendency to break. I replaced mine (and adjusted miles upwards as necessary) and it wasn't too bad. gear wasn't too expensive, and it was better than trying to buy another cluster at a yard
