jumpers backwards

What happens if the jumper cables are connected backwards long enough to make the battery smoke?

Could damage some electrical things. Like the voltage regulator (I think that's what its called.)

I would think you would burn out fuseable links before any damage is done but spiking the controller is a possibility.
I assume you did this and now you are experiancing problems other than a dead battery?

From reading your post I assUme you tried to jump start the car with jumper cables from another car and got the cables backwards?

If so make sure the battery is not reverse charged now. If it is, hook a light (headlight bulb works good) up to it and bring it back down before charging it again. forcing on a charger or jumper cables the correct way when reverse charged can cause it to explode or damage a good charger.

As far as the car I'm not help here all the reverse charged batteries I have seen were on 24 volt trucks caused by lazy mechanics. On them if you charge one correct and end up with one reverse charged they just cancel each other out and its just like you have 2 totally dead batteries.

Actually, it was my niece's 93 Celica. Now the car is completely dead with a known good battery (that I supplied). I checked a few things today and it does have 12 volts at the engine fuse under the hood. I was trying to get the alt out to have it and the integral voltage reg. tested but was stopped by a bolt with a 1/8 in. high head on it. She has no tools and lives 40 mi. from me so I guess I will have to grind the id chfr off of one of my sockets and try again next weekend.

NAJ, Do you know an easy way to locate fusable links? I've looked for them on other cars and could never find them.

Absolutely, though I will probably never meet the kid that did it. I will, however, make sure my niece knows how to jump her car if she needs to.
