IIRC the LeBaron had it up under the dash somewhere around the center, but I have no idea where they hid the relay socket in cars that didn't get Infinity. A friend of mine has an 89 LeBaron - he couldn't find that relay socket even though the car was wired for Infinity.

A transformer you say? That might be the choke. It's really just a big coil (it looks like a transformer) - should be two wires coming off of it. The relay socket may be nearby.

Here's some more info on the later models though:

The mid 90's pin out for the cd changer is what I need as well. I have a radio out of if I remember right has a 98 date code on it. I believe the switch to cd shouldn't be hard the radio has a mode button and cd is one of the modes. So I would guess in CD mode it should play.

My 89 GTC vert has the emit style rear speakers with a flat non weatherpack style connector, but my 88 Premium vert had the dome style rear speakers with the weatherpack style connector. If I had to guess I'd say 89 was the only year for the emit speakers in a Lebaron vert. On a side note, I sold an old set of aftermarket Infinity Kapas components I found at the junk yard with emit tweeters on Ebay and I was shocked at what they brought (over $200).

The EMIT tweeters are by far the best, if it wasn’t for OklahomaWolf I probably wouldn’t have thought much about these when rummaging around in the yards. I butchered a couple sets that I acquired and installed one set of them in the dash of my Daytona. The other two tweeters I installed over a set of Memphis speakers that had blown tweeters in them, these were a junkyard find as well. The bottom three pictures where ebay finds that I didn’t purchase because I was broke and still am. These speakers are all hooked up to four channel setup and can really get LOUD! I always keep the high pass filters on so lower frequencies won't destroy them.

The set I had were exactly like the bottom picture, only they were part of a set that had 6x9 woofers, 4 inch mids, EMIT tweeters, and a funky crossover. The crossover was strange in the fact that it required a seperate channel in for each speaker. The 6x9's were ruined, and one of the mids had a crack in the cone, but they still sold for over $200. I belive Kenwood also had a tweeter like that back in the early 90's, or late 80's.

Love that Infinity dash speaker grille

I'd love to get my hands on one of the original aftermarket Infinity speakers. I have a brochure from the late 80's that shows a three way component set with a 6x9" woofer, 4" (I think) midrange, and the EMIT tweeter (probably the same one as topdollar's).

Since I posted in this thread, I found a second set of LeBaron rear EMITs. The tweeters were blown both... one intermittent, the other totally dead. I fixed them both by taking them apart and resoldering the ribbon's voice coil connections. All it took was a quick tap with the hot iron.

Thanks, I did the same thing with my front door speakers as well. Would it be too much trouble if I could get a copy of that brochure you were talking about? I’d love to take a look at that.

Maybe if I find it sometime I'll scan it.

I spent most of the 80's collecting audio brochures. Some of them are real hard to find now, like my Cerwin-Vega 2000 series one. Not sure what's easier to find... the brochure or those speakers :)

Missed this one earlier. Perhaps they were replaced at one time... of the sets I found, one was from 88 and the other from 89. The part numbers match to Chrysler's e-fiche for those years. I think it's because Harman-Motive didn't have dome tweeters small enough at the time to build coaxial speakers with in 5.25" size that they used the EMITs. Even if you look at the rear 5x7's in a Daytona, the dome tweeters in them are huge 1" models. The EMIT tweeters had an advantage because of their flatness, but also had a disadvantage in that the crossover frequency needs to be really high on them. That's probably why they started using the 1/2" dome tweeters on everything in the 90's... they play lower and likely are cheaper to make.

They tried Mylar cone tweeters for a while from 90-91 as replacements for the EMITs, but those were a joke. They sound awful and blow easy. Of course, they're really cheaping out on them lately, so I'm not altogether sure they're the worst out there anymore. Dad's 96 Grand Caravan had paper cone tweeters in back. Yuck.

Do you mean house speakers? Or do you mean Cerwin Vega car audio; I’m looking for the older CV stuff that has the horn/ bullet style tweeters in them like these.

I mean house speakers... the 2000 series were huge things. One of my fondest memories is hanging out in a local audio shop where they ran the top of the line 2000-15's off a Carver M1.5t. Shook the whole store, or so it seemed at the time

I remember those C-V car speakers too. Don't know that I ever had a brochure for them though. Bose tried to do aftermarket once, too... those were interesting (and short lived).

Oklahoma Wolf,

Did that Infinity deck in your Fifth Avenue come in a non Infinity model also? I'm looking at an 87 New Yorker and it has the same silver deck with the EQ, but it doesn't say Infinity on the display, only Chrysler. It seems like the only way to get the EQ in 87 with a silver face was with the Infinity system, but his one makes me think otherwise. I guess it wouldn't be hard to find a black one and swap the insides around to get the aux input if this one doesn't have it.

That Infinity deck only came with 1987 Infinity systems in the Lebaron GTS, New Yorker, and Lancer. It's probably one of the rarest Chrysler decks out there. I think it took me 5 years to find even my one silver one on eBay.

There is a non-Infinity version that came in black face, silver face, and black with silver highlights. It was available from 85-87 and known as the Ultimate Sound deck. They're easier to find. That said, it's technically not the same model - the older Ultimate Sound deck had DNR and no AM stereo defeat mode while the Infinity version had Dolby NR and the AM stereo defeat control. Both were made by Mitsubishi.

If you're considering a car with either of these decks, be warned that they are infamous for bad solder joints. I don't think I had one that didn't need to be gone through and resoldered top to bottom. Sometimes, the only problem with them is missing display segments, but other times a whole channel will cut out or blast static.

Cool, thanks for the info. I will make sure to go through it and reflow everything. Are you the one who has all the nice Infinity writeups on Allpar?
