Speedometer is electrical but the odometer is purely mechanical and is driven by gears in the speedo housing.

Hmm, this explains why my and my friends odometer just stopped working, luckily for my friend though he pulled an entire gauge cluster out of an 88 Lebaron. I'm just kinda stuck for now. I'll have to give the site a try.

The problem is the factory grease, it hardens, makes the gears bind and then the teeth break.

Do you have any recommendations on grease that I should use for the gears so this doesnt happen again?

I left it dry. I only have a few thousand miles on it, but so far no problems...

White Lithium grease hardens so I do not like using it on anything.
If you are going to use anything use a couple of drops of motor oil or a light coating of anti-sieze lube or as stated above leave it dry.
Actually the site that sells them may have a better suggestion since the guy that owns the place designed these himself when he could not get them for his car.
