I want to get something for the SL that has no remote start, but has a turbo timer built in and when the alarm goes off, can alert the transmitter and/or pager like device that comes with it.

I had a bulldog with my Talon and liked the fact that you could remove the key from the ignition and the car would still run.

What have you heard good things about?

Either a common faulty brain or was installed wrong!!!

stay away from wall mart and weird named chinesse companys. stick with DEI (directed) brands. compustar's are nice, commando's are good.

I hate to highjack this thread, I want to put a remote start in my 92 Daytona Iroc R/T, but i realized that unless you put the clutch in, the car doesnt start. How would the remote start work, is it possible to have one in this car?

I would also recommend to stick with DEI brands.

As fate would have it, a Bulldog, just like the one that I had, was given to me. I tried to install it in an F150, and unknown to us it has some sort of module needed with an extra ignition key and a chip. It was a gift to the person I was installing it for and they just gave it to me instead of taking it back.

New question: I want to put this in and have my car running, take key out feature and maybe even the remote start. Can I install a rocker switch so that I can only start the car remotely when the switch is on and still use the key out feature? - like I would only flip the switch when I knew the car was in neutral. I have no safety interlock like 92s have.

(BTW, it is a feature with the system, not a computer problem - I was able to do it on the F150 as well)

Put a switch inline with the starter output from the alarm box. Break the circuit, and the thing won't start.

5 speed cars should use a unit such as the Compustar which is designed to SAFELY remote start a 5 speed vehicle. I've installed many of them. If you install a remote start meant for an automatic into a 5 speed car, I hope your well insured.

I agree, there are specific units out there that are designed to be used on a standard transmission vehicle. I have installed quiet a few of the Compustar units which work very nice other than the high price tag. Any unit with a turbo timer will have the remote start option as well since you need to energize ignition and accessory circuits to keep the car running anyways so they might as well include the start feature. Most of the units I've seen require a shutdown sequence to be able to remote start a manual trans vehicle. All it takes is one time forgetting to set the parking brake or leaving the car in gear and your car jumps the curb and hits somebody/something. better to be safe than sorry. I've also installed quite a few crimestopper units and have had good luck with them also. I think their new units offer a turbo timer setup also.

I had a cheap remote starter in my last 5-speed shadow (R.I.P because of the remote starter by the way) and i would use it as a turbo timer by just hitting the button when i was getting out and then i could pull the key and lock it up and walk away and 15 min later it would shut off and shut the lights out. This unit i had installed with keyless for $150.

When i had my remote starter installed the car was an auto but then i converted it over to a 5-speed and didn't bother putting a switch on the shifter because i am the only person that ever drives my car, then i had to lend my car to my buddy cause i was doing some work on his truck but without thinking i gave him my whole key chain and he was out visiting his sister with the car and thought he would try the starter out to worm the car up while he was still inside, when he started it the car was in 1st gear and took off down the street hitting a parked van then bouncing off it and hitting a tree and big green power box on a lawn and comming to a stop in a bush. When it was all said and done it cost $2000 to fix the van plus my car was done.

Well, I got the starter installed today and that all works - I'm installing a toggle switch on the starter lead.

Problem is - it has reversing polarity locks - meaning I had to get 2 more relays and I have to wire them up tomarrow. UG!
