I currently have a 85 dodge daytona and I am wanting to put in a 87 t2 motor, but i need to switch the harness. I have the harness to switch out and all but i dont know at all how to change it out. I havent taken out the old harness yet of the car so i need to start from there. How do i take it just take it off all the clips and it comes out? do i need to cut any wires off that are going in the the cab? Do i put the new harness in after i have the engine in, or do it before its in? I would think it is easyer to switch it after the engine is because i cant route it around the engine and get it in there good but thats just my thinking. Do i take it all the way out from the ecu clips and all and pull it out from the firewall, or cut it at the firewall and soder all wires back together and have it like. Im a complete dodge newbie and dont know what im doing at all when it comes to wiring. Also will i have to get a new ecu to run the different engine? Im also not sure on what turbo im going to be running or injectors or many other things for that matter. What should i do? Noob needs help

I am not farmiliar with the 85 wiring harnesses, but you will not need to cut wires to get the harnesses out of the vehicle. You will however need to disconnect a lot of connections from the interior of the car. Disconnect the whole harness from the engine and computer and it will slide throw the firewall. The clips will pop out of the fenders and sheet metal that they are secured to. However a few are bound to break in this process, just be patient and careful.

If you are a complete newbie, i recommend doing a lot of research before attempting this job. Do you have a donar car?? you are going to need the engine, wiring and computer from the donar car. Make sure you have complete wiring diagrams for both year vehicles, because you will need to make connections here and there.

Example, I am taking a my 90 daytona ES N/A and swapping in a turbo I from an 88 shadow. I had to seperate the lighting component from the engine components from each harness. Then intergrate the 88's engine components onto my 90's lighting and interior harness. Connecting things like speed sensors, oil, and water temp gauges, and most important the ignition wires.

Anyway. I hope this helps a little bit. There are many different ways to do this swap. All i can say i reseach research research....Good luck

it will be alot easier to install the harness with the engine out you can literally stand in the engine compartment and get access to the firewall, i would just install it to the firewall and hang all the harness that goes forward over the fenders till the engine is in then you can finish the harness.
one problem will arise the bulkhead disconnect in 85 ,which is the connector at the firewall on the drivers side where the harness passes through, is different then 86 or newer wire harnesses, this means that in order to use the newer engine harness you have to switch the dash harness as well. which means the dash will have to come out.
if you have any other questions let me know
i have tons of daytona stuff if you need anything too.
