My speed sensor breaks like once a year. anyone have any ideas as to why? the car has a quaife and a solid bobble strut so that might have something to do with it.

How are they broken?

I've got a solid bobble strut and I've never broken the same one I've had in my car for years.

You might want to make sure the pins on the connector are making good contact and the plug isn't soaked in oil. They don't last long because they are just a glass-enclosed mechanical switch, but they should last longer than a year.

What brand are you using?

Is the case or sensor housing cracked at all?

Weird, very weird. How the heck does the oil pan get the sensor covered, the sensor is higher up?

I would do what Russ suggests and check your wiring and connector!

where the oil pan meets the block is higher up than the sensor

can be lots of things - I opened mine up and redid the internals on my 2 wire sensor. The wires broke off mine, so I resoldered them to the glass sensor inside, and cleaned up the 'flying magnet' in there too (was quite rusty, dirty, grimey, etc).

I suspect that if the speedo is jumping around, that the magnet might be turning on the shaft, I was able to turn mine fairly easily, so I glued the sucker in place real good with some superglue (model airplane type). Havn't had a problem yet...

You can sometimes eek a few more miles out of one by bending the metal tab inside to bring the contacts closer to the magnet.
