No key in ignition to Start???

Have a odd situation, 90 ES Daytona, the key turner thing is broken so right now the key is turning the ignition (going to break very soon) can I just brake the steering lock and install a switch to start the car/turn it off?

I know somebody else has done this before but cannot seem to find the posts...

all help would be greatly appreciated.

How about just reattaching the "turning thing"? Some JB weld or something should do the trick, eh?

mmmm.... want something that isn't going to break 100 miles away from home or a method of starting the car that is reliable...

been thinking about breaking the steering lock and trying a screwdriver...

My old 90 Daytona that I sold to a friend of mine is doing this. I looked at it for her the other day and it's gotten way worse than when I had it. You can turn it by hand with no key(no start though). It won't start at all now, but I don't think related. The remote starter won't crank it either so I'm going to check out the starter tomorrow.

whats up with 90 daytona ignitions. both mine and my friends you could put the key in and start it and take it out while its still running. i killed my battery once cause when i got out of my car it didn't turn the ignition all the way off so my dome light stayed on or something, so i have to make sure i jiggle my key while pulling it out everytime or else it could stay on and you can just get in and turn the lock without the key in it.

You can put a switch on the yellow (starter) wire if you want to include a 'theft-deterrent' system. That way you wouldn't be able to start the car unless your switch was on.

when weather warms up, im going back to the JY and finding the cars I yanked keys from and seeing about pulling a whole lock from one and transplanting it... maybe

Changing the whole lock cylinder and stuff isnt hard I had mine apart all the way to that point and had it out. Why not get a whole new used column if nothing else cheap and transplant it in

cause i know the rest of the stuff on the current column actually works and its cheaper to just pickup the lock, besides i think all the columns are totally off colors
that is good to know its not too much of a pain in the butt to change out.

No its fairly easy to change out, just need the the steering wheel depressor and the wheel puller to get the wheel of, the rest is screwdriver or allen headed. i think it took me 20 min to get all the stuff out
