I've got an '85 Omni GLH with a sticky issue... When I start it up. sometimes it charges normal for a few minutes, but more often than not the voltage shoots up to 18-19 volts, pegging the dash voltmeter and making me very nervous.

I've been through all the wiring and connectors and everything looks good, no breaks... there was some corrosion on the connectors at the alternator that I cleaned up and put di-electric on to protect, and that seemed to make it *worse*. So, does this sound like an alternator problem (looks like the alternator is the OEM unit), or have I fried something in the SMEC?

Frankly I hope it's the alternator I'll have an easier time finding it.

Side note: What's the company that provides urethane alternator bushings for FWD dodges?

I've read some other posts and I think it's the alternator.... will change and report back. If it works, someone should write up a post and sticky it for this problem wince it seems it happens often with the older models

Ah, here's the update. I was misinformed, too much working on modern FWD Dodges fried me. The car did have a seperate voltage regulator, and changing that did help. Had to change the alternator too anyways since the stock one was looking ready to lunch it's bearings or puke a brush or two.
