I was wondering if any of the TD vendors carrying pistons have those with radial gas ports? I would think this would be a nice addition(sp?) to some applications that need extra sealing power. I know some racing engines have them, but I dunno if they are made for street motors...

Every aftermarket piston Ive seen has them. I assume your referring to the holes in the bottom ringland?

Actually, I believe they are on the top ring land... as the gases would push on the compression ring. I think those holes are oil drainback/drainage holes or something like it. I believe it works about the same way... I was talking to a friend about that. I know most don't carry pistons with verticle gas ports, as those get clogged pretty easily.

Cant have degassing ports on the top ring as compression would simply blow by, and oil isnt supposed to get up that high so its not for oil.

Hm... well, I guess it's not that big of a deal. I don't THAT much about cars, so I'll just go with what you say...

We use gas ported piston on V8 race engines all the time. I don't know if it would work the same on a turbo engine, though. The cylinder pressures are likely higher due to boost.

Gas porting allows a lower top ring tension (ie - lower friction), but the gas ports allow the combustion pressure to push the ring out when sealing is needed.

I chatted with my engine builder today on them and he is running some on a 6.7 second drag car, he says they have about 13-15% leakdown, but for what hes doing he needs the gas ports. He rattle a bunch of other things, ring flutter and so on, but said for most applications you dont need/want them.

I've heard a LOT of conflicting viewpoints on gas ports. Gas ports shouldn't contribute to blow-by, and the extra sealing power under pressure would reduce oil consumption. The only thing I could see is the ports getting clogged leading to more leakage with the lower tension vs. just having a higher static tension...

I think somebody makes those for their forged pistons, anyways.

Wiseco can gass port pistons
I was going to have that done to mine years ago
but the omni was still highly street driven back then
Didn't think I needed it on a low 12 sec street driven omni
