Im planning to swap a 2.5 shortblock into my 85 charger along with a TII conversion, and im looking for a computer similar in performance to a glhs stage II computer that will work with the 2.5. Basicly it needs to be able to pass an emisisons test and run on 91 octane gas. I hear alot of different stuff about who to buy a computer from, but im looking for something that will work well, and if it doesnt work i will be able to return it.

DIY.... And a wideband O2 sensor will let you pass emissions.

UNA perhaps oversimplifies this a bit; many ways to go about this

1. you could probably find a vendor to supply a 85-86 computer loaded with a cal for your application ; this is probably the easiest way to make the swap, but as you allude - whether the loaded cal works perfect is hard to determine

2. an alternative is to socket your 85-6 computer or better yet find an 87 LM and socket that; that way you can play with cals much easier (swap chips not LMs); some members on the board can flash a cal to a chip for you , and cheap too ; I got one from a member here for 10$ shipped ; if the cal doesnt work perfect you can iterate some , and at 10$ / chip its not too costly

3. then the next level of complexity is to buy a PROM flasher and flash your own chips, using D-Cal or CHeM as the interface

4. then the next level of complexity would be to interface a laptop directly to the LM and then be able to make cal changes in real time; not sure if you can do that with an 87 LM

5. you could go with an aftermarket computer

6. you could swap to SMEC and do 1,2,3,4 above

I'm doing number 2 with my TII conversion 86 Omni ; found an 87 LM, got it socketed...

PS and of course the wideband by itself wont make you pass emissions, but it will help the tuning process; you will still need to work on getting the cal right, one way or another

FWDP has hundreds of different calibrations depending on application. I recommend the Innovate wideband.

Its proven a FWDP cal gets better mileage than the competetors cal, and that efficiency translates into more power and fuel economy and cleaner emissions.

I have always passed emmsions in ala my cars using FWD-P cals here in Texas. That is about 9 different cars and cals to date. I have a huge list of customers that had no trouble passing emmissions in various states across the country. UNA doesn't know what he is talking about!!
Later,
Cindy

You know why I can't stand you people? You stand by and turn a deaf ear while fellow TDers are getting RIPPED OFF.. Dave Thompson, aka Omnious, flagrantly stole money from me, and nobody gives a flaming phuck! So yeah, I'm going to stick around and piss on everyone for it.

Travis_k, you forgot to say, pass CA smog.

I'd get a 87 TII cal with +20% injectors. Then try to pass smog with that and see what happens.

After you know your car would pass smog, then you can do whatever do it for another 2 years. If they ask you what happened to your EGR valve, say you replaced the engine with a 89 Daytona Shelby TII (TII cars never came with EGR valve), they will then smog your car with Daytona's smog spec.
