Mine usually come and go on a pallet.
Wrap it in plastic and tie it (I usually prefer some cheap ratchet straps) down.

i use big blue tote bins from wall mart. plywood the bottom and fill with peanuts, news paper, bla bla bla, zip tie the cover on and there ya go. alot cheaper to ship this way..anything involving a pallett is very expencive.

Best way is to send in a crate!! 2nd best is pallet then tote and the worst is in a box.
Why? first off most shortblocks will be over the 150# weight limit for fedex and ups. Therefore will have to be shipped via truck. Pallets/crates are the prefered method. In a crate or pallet (we normally ship engines in crates and transmissions on pallets) you can use tie downs to secure it safely.
using a tote is a bad idea. Most are broken by the time they arrive to their destination and the heavier the item, more likely to be dropped and damaged. A frieght company has no good way to lift a tote versus a crate or pallet, more likely to be damage by them. Peanuts have absolutely NO PROTECTION for heavy items. If you have to use a tote, wrap items ina heavy blanket/quilt or several layers of large bubble wrap. Place in container and make sure item it can not move by providing padding in every single nook and cranny all the way to the top, and cover the item as well. use self tapping screws to secure the lid to the bottom and then wrap the tote especially the cover to bottom area in duct tape. Then say a prayer and hope it arrives safely.
later,
Cindy

ummm..... a shortblock is a shortblock.

Shortblock = the bottom end, complete motor minus head and manifolds, everything below the head gasket

longblock = shortblock with a head

complete usually means a longblock with manifolds

oh, and a bare block is just that - only the block. Maybe this is what you mean?
