I think he meant what year distributor are you looking for.
I'm also curious what year FSM you took those pictures from???
AFAIK, the 2.2 never came with a vacuum advance distributor. It was always electronic, even in 81. I believe some of the early VW 1.7's had vacuum advance. Maybe even the 2.6 Mitsu motors may have had a vacuum advance distributor. I'd have to look in my 83 FSM. The mounting boss shown in the illustration definitely isn't for a 2.2. You sure your taking pictures of the correct section?
Those pics are straight from the 84 L body FSM. Since it was in there, I assumed an early carb model had one like that.
I ran across a mod using a Bosh VW distributor, but the shaft modifications seemed somewhat complex. Was trying to find a simple solution, just a regular distributor with rotor and points with the weights in the bottom. The vacuum diaphragm would allow for some additional dwell, but it's not a deal breaker.
When you have a chance, I would be curious if the Mitsu distributor would work in a 2.2.
My guess is, if you look close, that page in the FSM is either for the 1.7 or 1.6 motor, maybe even the 2.6. I haven't had a chance to look at my 83 FSM to find a similar illustration.
Like I said before, AFAIK, the 2.2 never had a vacuum advance distributor.
Yes, there is a conversion for a VW Bosch 009 distributor. But be warned, all the new units are coming out of China, and from what I've read, they are junk...
A 2300 Ford distributor is what I use in my oval track car. It works well with a few simple mods. Remove Ford gear and install 2.2 distributor drive , then clock it in the engine and drill the roll pin hole. You can use the entire Ford duraspark ignition system which is good to 8000rpm . Parts are easily available from any parts house for the Ford ignition.
I bought a 300.00 Mallory distributor once and had problems with it on race night. No parts anywhere to repair it and it took 4 days to get a rotor button. Not a good night.
I'm going to see about using the VW Bosh 050 distributor mod instead. I want to have a good ole fashioned distributor that I can drop in if the discontinued Mallory one that's in there now goes bad.
As Miss Emilie Litella used to say...
